In the dazzling but unforgiving world of Belle Époque Paris, 14-year-old Marie van Goethem is poor, ambitious and determined to become a ballerina. She dreams of a life beyond the one she was born into – and of being seen, remembered and becoming more than the world expects her to be.
Then she meets Edgar Degas.
Fascinated by the young dancer, Degas chooses Marie as the model for the sculpture that will become one of his most famous works. Their lives become connected through art and ambition – and Marie, a girl who might otherwise have disappeared from history, is immortalised as Little Dancer.
But behind the famous sculpture is the story of a real girl with impossible dreams. Little Dancer explores ambition, identity, art and the deeply human desire to matter, asking a question that reaches far beyond the world of ballet: do we shape our destiny, or does it shape us?
Created by Tony and Olivier Award-winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty – the team behind Anastasia, Ragtime and Once on This Island – and directed and choreographed by five-time Tony and Olivier Award-winner Susan Stroman, the musical brings together sweeping storytelling, music and dance.
Emmy Award-winner and New York City Ballet principal dancer Tiler Peck stars as young Marie, alongside Julian Ovenden as Edgar Degas, in this new West End musical.
